Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI)

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI)

The key to the success of your virtual meetings/webinars requires
much more than just a tech platform…

With a background in Computer Engineering research for more than 15 years, Dr. Bernard Song has also been a consultant interpreter for the past decade, working with various SI equipment partners and top-level interpreters across the world.

With Covid-19 having led to a global work-from-home experiment, clients and interpreters are left with no other options but resorting to remote simultaneous interpretion (RSI) solutions.

The proliferation of smartphones and other BYOD devices around the world, enterprise-level migration of their applications to the cloud, as well as the recent evolution of real-time transmission technology, RSI has indeed become more feasible. However, there are still a number of factors to consider in order to organize a successful virtual event on RSI platforms, especially how to manage client’s expectation when compared to the traditional SI solution (for more details, please refer to my article Considerations When Using RSI).

Seeking the counsel of an RSI expert

Using an RSI platform isn’t just registering an account and getting everybody to sign in. You need to be well equipped with information, such as cost, scale, geographical coverage of audience, adjacency of interpreters, time zones, audio meeting only or video conference, etc.

An effective RSI expert can help you identify the most cost-efficient solution to your event, plan your project appropriately and most importantly help you familiarize with the whole process avoiding possible issues as it is most likely your first time dealing with an RSI platform, as illustrated in the figure below.

Due to the covid-19 outbreak, Forum had to make a swift decision to move our workshop online and deliver it through a webinar. The content of the workshop were somewhat technical and the audience mainly use mandarin as a first language. We engaged the help of Bernard who provided Forum with remote simultaneous interpretation service. Bernard and his colleagues were truly professional. With a short turnaround time, he and his team were able to grasp the technical content and deliver without missing the intention of the message which is often the biggest challenge in interpretation. Bernard also has fantastic IT skills and supported us with the webinar test run and set up, making the whole process a lot less stressful and allowing us to focus on content delivery. His vast experience as a consultant interpreter, together with his technical knowledge and hands on experience in remote simultaneous interpretation service would benefit any organisations looking to do multi language webinar.
