What Interpreters Know About CAI That Most Conversations Get Wrong

Before we talk about AI, we need to talk about CAI.

Computer-Assisted Interpreting is not a synonym for artificial intelligence. It never was. Long before neural models entered the conversation, interpreters were already using computers to assist memory, terminology access, document handling, audio routing, and preparation.

CAI is defined by real-timeliness, not by intelligence.

That distinction matters, because most of what is currently discussed, celebrated or feared, under the banner of “AI in interpreting” quietly ignores the one constraint that interpreters can never ignore: there is no pause button.

Real Time Is Not a Feature. It Is a Constraint.

Interpreting happens in a continuous flow. Decisions are made under irreversible time pressure. Once a sentence is delivered, it cannot be recalled, reprocessed, or “improved.”

This is why many AI systems, however impressive in other domains, struggle in interpreting contexts. They are designed for:

  • batch processing
  • deferred correction
  • high compute availability
  • tolerance for latency

Interpreting allows none of that.

In real-time work, even a few hundred milliseconds matter. A tool that requires connectivity, upstream processing, or heavy computation is not simply “slower”, it behaves differently under stress. And in interpreting, behavior under stress is the only behavior that counts.

CAI tools live or die by whether they can operate within this constraint, not by how sophisticated their underlying models may be.

The Job Is Not Language. It Is Control.

From the outside, interpreting looks like fast translation. From the inside, it is something else entirely.

The real work is control:

  • control of attention
  • control of timing
  • control of uncertainty

Interpreters constantly regulate what they attend to, what they ignore, and what they defer. This internal economy is finely balanced. Any assistance, human or technological, competes for that balance.

This is why CAI is not about “more information.” It is about the right information, at the right moment, with the lowest possible cognitive cost.

A tool that surfaces excellent content at the wrong time is not neutral. It is disruptive.

When Assistance Becomes Interference

Most interpreters who have experimented with live assistance recognize the same pattern.

At first, the tool feels helpful. A term appears. A phrase is suggested. You feel supported.

Then the attention starts to split.

You glance. You verify. You hesitate - just slightly.

The issue is not whether the content is accurate. The issue is that the interpreter’s attention has been recruited without consent. In a task that is already attention-saturated, this recruitment has a price.

This is why debates about CAI accuracy often miss the point. The primary risk is not wrong output. It is misplaced attention.

Errors can be corrected. Fragmented attention is harder to recover.

Why CAI Cannot Be Judged Like Other AI Tools

Most AI tools are evaluated by output quality. CAI tools must be evaluated by behavioral impact.

The relevant questions are not:

  • Is the transcript accurate?
  • Is the suggestion clever?

They are:

  • Does the tool behave predictably?
  • Does it stay silent when silence is needed?
  • Does it demand attention or wait to be invited?
  • Does it reduce uncertainty or introduce a new one?

In high-stakes settings, reliability beats brilliance every time. Interpreters do not need tools that occasionally amaze. They need tools that never surprise them.

Offline Is About Bounded Behavior, Not Nostalgia

Preferences for offline or local CAI tools are often misread as resistance to innovation.

In practice, they are about bounded behavior.

An offline system does what it does, and nothing else. It does not change overnight. It does not depend on connectivity, vendor decisions, or upstream updates. Its limitations are visible and stable.

For interpreters, this predictability is not a technical luxury. It is cognitive relief.

When speakers are unpredictable, agendas shift, and pressure escalates, having at least one component of the system that is fully under your control matters more than marginal gains in performance.

Responsibility Cannot Be Delegated Ambiguously

Interpreters are trained to take responsibility. When something goes wrong, they do not blame the booth, the console, or the glossary software.

CAI complicates this ethic.

If a tool nudges an interpreter toward a phrasing, who owns the decision? If latency disrupts timing, where does responsibility sit? If an assistance layer quietly fails, how quickly can the interpreter detect and override it?

Tools that blur agency feel uncomfortable not because interpreters fear accountability, but because they take it seriously.

A CAI system must behave like an instrument, not a collaborator with unclear boundaries.

Why Clients Often Ask the Wrong Questions

End clients usually ask whether CAI makes interpreting faster, cheaper, or “good enough.”

Interpreters ask something else: what does this do to performance over time?

Some tools look efficient externally but increase fatigue, reduce resilience, or narrow recovery margins. These effects do not show up in transcripts or dashboards. They appear months later, in hesitation, strain, or burnout.

This is why practitioners are often more cautious than institutions. They live with the consequences long after the meeting ends.

Where CAI Actually Helps

CAI succeeds when it:

  • reinforces interpreter control
  • reduces uncertainty without demanding attention
  • behaves consistently under stress
  • disappears into the workflow

The most successful technologies in interpreting history share one trait: once mastered, they fade into the background.

CAI will become part of interpreting not by replacing judgment, and not by flooding the booth with information, but by quietly supporting the interpreter’s ability to stay in control when conditions deteriorate.

A Closing Thought

When interpreters evaluate CAI tools, they are not asking:

“Is this advanced?”

They are asking:

“Will this still behave sensibly when everything starts to go wrong?”

That question cannot be answered by demos, benchmarks, or promises.

It can only be answered by tools that respect real time, cognitive limits, and professional responsibility.

That is not resistance to technology.

That is professional memory doing its job.
